>>11143255Afaik the "gaussian blur" is just used because it's an easy function/distribution to write down that meets the basic requirements (smooth, big in the middle, small at the edges).
However there might be some further reason for using it that comes from signal processing -- and that could be either the theoretical side (e.g. it's the unique solution to some differentiap equation or has some nice Fourier property or whatever) or the engineering side (they had a practical design for a circuit that would spit out a wave that was pretty close to the gaussian distribution)
