Should I pursue a Masters and PhD in Computer Science? And that means actual science, not the glorified software development they've taught to me for my bachelors. If so, what field? I've found cryptography interesting, haven't done any AI stuff, and quantum computing is a shitty buzzword.
I'm extremely lazy and demotivated so I'm not sure whether I should just resign myself to a high-paying job as a web developer and just enjoy being a pseudo-depressive lazyass.

Well, this is just untrue. I'm doing a postgrad course in it currently, and it's genuinely worth studying. The algorithms and approach are very much unlike the classical case, and are usually very clever.

I wouldn't recommend pursuing further study unless you actually like the subject, and are at least able to motivate yourself with things you find interesting.

What sort of subjects have you liked so far? What type of problems do you enjoy solving?

I do love cryptography. I've worked with the front-end of the tripleDES encryption method - while it's outdated and I didn't work with the actual encryption at all, the mathematics and concepts behind it fascinates me. I also enjoy programming in general, although after interning at a software developer position I think I wouldn't be super happy being a code monkey for the rest of my life.

Is Quantum Computing not mostly useless, though? I know it has some applications - for cracking a handful of unique encryption algorithms - but really using the phase of a probability with the Hadamard operand and whatnot seems like it has extremely limited uses. I'm sure the math behind it is sound, but I feel like it's going to die off after the buzzword hype dies off.

Right now Quantum computing is like where classical computing was in the 1950s. Obviously the technology isn't here yet, but that doesn't mean you cannot generate insights into QC, just like people implemented algorithms in Classical computing before the tech was there yet.

It's going to take a few breakthroughs to get QC in a place where it is practically viable. QC is a fundamentally different way of computing, so the ceiling for usefulness is very high atm. Whether or not we will these breakthrough will come, I mean I don't have a crystal ball. But I speculate that QC will improve at least at the same rate that classical computing did, if not faster.

Current Quantum Computers _are_ useless, but quantum computers are not useless in principle. I've been told there are other consequences (even applications) in cryptography/security, but I don't yet know what they are (that course starts next semester); as well as good approximation algorithms for hard optimisation/OR problems, and (apparently) applications for ML and computational physics.

As for cryptography, I can't really speak all that much for it, since I've only studied it at Hons level; but unless you do an MScR, you won't just be able to do just cryptography. Where I am, I only know of 3 or 4 courses directly related to this at postgrad level (although your project certainly will be related), so you'll need more interests.

Do you have much experience on the theoretical side, i.e. showing problems with cryptographic protocols, number theory etc.?
