When it comes to physics really tiny things happen to act as both particles and waves depending on if they're observed or not, the wave function of something represents its probability to beat a certain location.
Things like quantum tunneling happens if the wave function has a portion outside of some boundary, when you observe it theres a chance for it to exist beyond said boundary and so it jumps there.
