Because gravity is only strong when you are near the black hole and the universe is a lot bigger than you think, most of space is just empty space that's why it's called space. The black holes aren't anywhere near anything else and when they are they do eat it up.

Black holes function the same way as other objects like stars, they are just denser. Why doesn’t everything in the solar system just get eaten by the sun?

Because the mass of the sun is way less denser than the mass of a black sphere, therefore the gravitational pull of the sun is way weaker than the gravitational pull of a black sphere. So that's why the sun wont engulf anything.
