Here's a picture of a cyclotron in the Czech Republic. This is normally used to irradiate chemotherapy medicine, but we had borrowed it to do irradiation testing of some electronics that are currently being installed in the Large Hadron Collider.

And here we are below the cyclotron installing the test equipment. A sensor is placed above directly in front of the particle beam, while the readout electronics connected to the sensor is what you see on the desk. These two components is what will form the innermost detector of ALICE, so they need to withstand a lot of radiation.

Here's the second test site, the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source in England. It's the same kind of irradiating testing, but instead of electromagnetic radiation, it's neutrons that are being blasted at the electronics.

By the way these pictures were taken around 03:00 in the middle of the night, and I am the only one around. Time was precious so we had to run the test 24/7 and take shifts during the night. Pretty crazy in retrospect that they let some dinky university student like me roam alone in the hall surrounded by probably billions of dollars worth of equipment.

The complex around ISIS contained a lot of other cool science facilities, like the Vulcan Petawatt laser, and ESA offices. Unfortunately I didn't get to go inside.

Not much else to show really. This is part of the CERN complex, the largest building is the datacenter that processes all the data coming from the various experiments. You can see on the sign that the road is called Route Rutherford. All the roads in the CERN complex is named after scientists. The CERN complex is a large, shut off area containing its own hotels, restaurants, emergency services, customs, etc, it's almost like a little country in and of itself. It cuts right through the border between France and Switzerland, but you don't notice it, it has a special status making it kind of its own territory.

Great post, jelly of your job.
Over the years I realized that I love applied physics. I like micro/nano manufacturing, optics, solid state physics, fast/ultrafast processes, plasma physics. All of them superficially but I think I'd like to dive deeper.
I'm not so fond of maths but I could handle something more advanced than calc2 if it was for the sake of building neat contraptions like accelerators etc. It's a shame I didn't know then what I know now. Also a shame that applied physics degrees aren't very employable in engineering-like positions.

I'm not fully involved in the science but I know that the sensors will be able to be arranged much close to the particle collision point, the innermost barrel of sensors has a radius of just 22 mm. This greatly increases accuracy of particle path measurements. The sensors themselves are better too, completely new ALPIDE sensors made specifically for ALICE. The readout electronics, which is what we worked on, is upgraded with tighter trigger timings and higher data throughput too.
