I have done the same thing OP and I am convinced that without help only maybe one in ten thousand people would ever solve a rubik's cube and that would be after doing as you say, taking pen to paper or using a computer

I seriously doubt any human could solve one just by holding it in his hands and fiddling with it till he got it right

the problem is trying to think in terms of strategy rather than coming up with a solution for any given case.
A few days probably isn't adequate to develop a strategy around the mechanics of the Rubik's Cube.

I figured out a method to solve it myself. It took me the whole day to figure it out. Later I got it down to around 10-15 min. It was very inefficient, but it was my solution. Felt good. Stop looking things up

It's not that hard. I might be smarter than you, but I figured it out myself.

Here's the key to my method. Turn two sides, and then turn them back in the opposite order. This is called a commutator in group theory, but you won't actually need to use any fancy mathematics. When you do the commutator most cubes won't change, but some will. Notice the pattern of the squares that do change. Using that you can get all the cubes in their correct position, but they might be twisted. Chaining together more commutators you can twist them in the right position.

Takes awhile but it works

Basically, if you can do a sequence of moves that changes only one piece on a layer (putting the last piece in a layer is an example), this can be used in a commutator (as >>11136918 mentions) by doing the sequence of moves then twisting the layer then undoing the sequence of moves then twisting the layer back.
This allows you to cycle 3 pieces or change the orientation of 2 pieces.
You can solve ALL rubiks puzzles this way.

You can't fix parity errors with them since they're always an even number of moves

If there are any speedsolving nerds in here who feel comfortable with a 3x3x3 and commutators, have a go at the Magic Cube 4D. Go back to uncomfortable basics and get familiar with making a 4D cross, then try some F2L, then finish her up. I believe in you

This was exactly my strategy. Looking for moves that, when repeated, return the cube into its original configuration. Basically roots of unity operations. Then starting to mix those operations. In between one of those operations, do another one, then end the first, and then the other.
Took me almost two full days (sans shitting and eating).

Parity issues only arise when the cube has even side-length.
They can be solved by a quarter turn.
The commutator works for the 4D cube as well.
It takes 16 moves (at minimum) to do a 3-cycle vs 8 moves for the 3D cube vs 4 moves for the 2D cube.
