Curious question if anyone knows the answer.

I understand that anthropic selection is sometimes used as the reason for the fine tuning of our cosmological constant, as well as other physical constants.

But I have an issue with that, whether or not the multiverse exists, how would any of the main theories for the multiverse explain the AMOUNT of constants there are. Why are there 26 fundamental constants, and not 36, or 89.

What happened pre big-bang that 'selected' these constant categories anyways. I feel in that regard (unless im ignorant), invoking anthropic selection is a poor mechanism by which to describe the values of our finely tuned physical constants, someone enlighten me.
