Through symmetry breaking, electroweak interaction decays into electromagnetic and weak interaction. This symmetry breaking mechanism basically implies that our universe once was in an excited state, but then decayed into a lower energy state with lower symmetry.
Cool fact about the Higgs boson: it's in a mass range that gives a high probability for our universe not being in its ground state. If it ever fluctuates into its ground state, another symmetry breaking will occur, photons will suddenly gain a mass and hence, electromagnetism will have finite reach. This makes all atoms fall apart and everything dies. Cool, ain't it?
