Okay how the fuck do we know how big the universe is? I saw a chart pic that shows the solar system, the milky way, virgo supercluster, then a million tons of similar superclusters, I can't fucking fathom it, don't tell me we photographed it all
what's the proof?

Yes we literally saw it all with different wavelengths of light. We can't see everything due to the finite age of the universe and the finite speed of light. The part we have access to is called the visible universe and we don't know anything beyond that. The CMB is the farthest out we can see, and so marks the boundary of the visible universe (in principle we could see a tiny bit further if techniques were developed to do so, but not much further)

Finite going backwards in time. The further out you look, the further back in time you are looking because it takes time for the light to reach us. Eventually we reach the time of the big bang and can't see any further. In practice we are blocked by the CMB which is a bit after the big bang, but it was a time when the entire universe was a big plasma like the interior of a star

I get it, I completely misunderstood. Basically anything we see past a certain point is actually something happening millions or billions of lightyears before. Or something to that effect.
Time is a really weird thing to think about in space. Things like the lifetime of stars and black holes and everything like that have such a long timeframe that is so difficult to comprehend.

Calculate the distance out to the CMB and then the distance out to the CNB using redshift and see how different they are.

Or, if you are lazy, note that recombination happened a few hundred thousand years (10^5) after the big bang and we are 14 billion years (10^10) after the big bang.

Would that even be possible? It takes time for stars and planets and life to form, and I would guess by that point the visible universe is already quite large
