Has anyone gone through the first book at least? Or answered some exercises?

It's very good for rigor and scope - if you read it and understand it and do most of the exercises (not the research level ones) you will know more than the average CS major and maybe a bit more than the average masters student. The prerequisite math is contained in the companion text Concrete Mathematics. I would recommend that if you read CM, to read it alongside the free Mathematics for Computer Science by Eric Lehman. Each volume of TAOCS could probably constitute a semester length course at the advanced undergraduate or graduate level, but it would be highly specialised - you would know nothing about other aspects of theoretical CS or hardware or software engineering, etc etc. Maybe have a look at the /sci/ wiki reading list for CS and also https://www.msreverseengineering.com/program-analysis-reading-list/ to broaden your horizons. And maybe also look at scientific computing and numerical analysis stuff if your a natural scientist or engineer.

Are my classmates scared or just plain dumb? They keep discouraging me in reading TAOCP and Concrete Mathematics. But I've find the enjoyable, especially now that Knuth has updated the language used in TAOCP(from MIX to MMIX).

From a math brainlet with only a hs level of math, I can now understand and do some proofs.

I read the introduction and chapter 1 of Concrete Mathematics and found the expositional style quite good. Also the students's comments on the margins were quite relatable and gave the book a different feel from other Math texts.

I'm reading pic related for an introduction to proofs.

Haven't finished it. It's good, but I'd say it's a tome of our achievements towards the 90s and early 2000s. Look to things like harmonic/fourier analysis in noise stability, analytic combinatorics, or algebraic geometry in geometric complexity to see how modern CS gels with high powered math

TAOCP is great for learning from scratch, the math prelims are terse but it's all you really need if you're interest is compiler/program optimization. There is currently gigantic demand for this because of cpu industry fuckups where we now need to disable large parts of branch prediction in order to avoid unfixible hardware bugs that need a decade of reeingeering in order to fully fix (spectre/meltdown). http://cr.yp.to/talks/2019.09.23/slides-djb-20190923-branch-a4.pdf

To learn TAOCP math prelims, write your own examples when he's doing stuff like teaching the algebraic operations w/summation notation. To write a proof, read the math reasoning appendix in Tao's Analysis I book (libgen.is). Confirm Knuth's hypotenuse. Look at the strategy he uses to prove something in the chapter. Mimic that with your exercises attempts, usually it will work. That's how most of the workflow goes in TAOCP. Just trying the open research problems he dumps in every chapter is often illuminating it's nice to have material with real challenges in it that still haven't been solved 50+ years later.

I spent more time with concrete mathematics than I did with TAOCP. Excellent reads though

I hope to see more traditional fields like analysis and algebra make more headway into the theory of computation, even though algebra is already pretty firmly featured

no, you can figure it all out on your own if you already know algebra and combinatorics. the specifics of whatever cs you're reading have more to do with hardware restrictions and thus will be outdated within a decade. Buy the books as a reference, but don't read 4 giant books front-to- back. Just familiarize yourself with them and refer when you think there might be some relevant info in one.

CS and software development are two different things
Also, seeing as how concrete math is a primer to the books, and it's still something late undergrads at stanford struggle with, I really wouldn't say it's trivial even after the prerequisite combinatorial knowledge and familiarity with abstract algebra.

CS isn't the stuff you learn in order to program - it is a field of mathematical inquiry itself. If you're interested in that, TAOCP is a fun read if a little classic, but just because analytic combinatorics exists doesn't make it magically irrelevant
