grew up in an affluent area, with wealthy parents and no shortage of academic and extracurricular resources.
sometimes I wonder if I'm actually smart or simply where I am because I was lucky enough to start off better than most

The alternative would be a socialist system where everyone would have equal access to education. Utilization of resources would be high with a detriment to the economic well-being of the state. Many would graduate with degrees but then who would want to work in the coal mines?

A healthy economy needs to have classes. Someone needs to clean the toilets while others shit in them.
