It is simply how the equations turn out. A super dense spherically symmetric object with radius less than the Schwarzschild radius can not be stable, it must keep shrinking (This is called Buchdal's theorem)
If the question is why there needs to be a singularity in real black holes which take into account things like quantum mechanics, the answer is we don't whether there is a singularity at all. This isn't a controversial view at all. All physicists understand our current understanding of physics would need to be modified near a singularity.
