Normally, in a DC (direct current) such as a solar panel, the voltage is low and the amps are high (remember that if power remains the same, increasing voltage will decrease amps and vice versa, but energy will be the same). Low voltage means high resistance to current. Therefore, the inverter is put as near the panels as possible, because resistance is also directly proportional to the length of wire. Once inverted to AC (Alternate current, the one you get from the grid), the voltage gets high and amps become low so your house can be powered without wasted energy on resistance.
