Personnally after g I just go back at the begining of the alphabet and put letter into capital:
A(x),B(x),C(x) etc.
For variables I just put numbers (in functions) or an apostrophe (in groups):
x',y',z',x1,y1,z1 ztc.

\phi, \psi, \lambda, u, v are ok for me.
Also use F, f', \tilde{f}, \overline{f}, when there is some relation to f.
