If an electrical circuit is like a pipe network, capacitors are like reservoirs that fill with water (charge).

Think about it in terms of electric field. If you have a single capacitor that consists of two parallel plates, you may agree that the electric field across the gap is constant. The voltage in between any two points is the integral of the electric field across the gap. A small capacitor represents a larger distance and a bigger capacitor a shorter one, thus the small capacitor eats most of the field.

for an RLC loop. Notice that inductor gives the second order term, the resistor the first, and the capacitor the zeroth. In a spring-damper-mass system, the mass gives the second order term, the damper the first order, and the spring the zeroth.
In this analogy, a capacitor is more like a spring, a resistor is more like a mechanical damper, and an inductor is more like inertia.

so capacitance is Q/V which, on a Q-V curve represents the slope. this means "how much charge can a capacitor hold per volt?" the higher the number the better the capacitor is at holding charge. how do you increase this charge? most commonly by making the plates bigger (more charge can build up on a larger plate thus higher charge per volt thus higher capacitance). when two identical capacitors are in parallel you get twice the surface area to store charge in that part of the circuit, so you can add them. when they're in series electron flow is completely limited by the capacitor with the least capacitance (basically the one with the smallest plates). you cannot have a larger total capacitance than the capacitor with the smallest plate because they're all fucked by that one. so that's why the capacitance gets smaller than the smallest plate, but i have no fuckin clue beyond that

Fair enough. In a breaker points sys, capacitors are used to enable an abrupt opening so you don't have sparks waning out and f'ing things up. I would say they are accumulators here. In a lot of feedback loops, they dampen tiny fluctuations. Is that other dude saying a coil is a spring and a spring is a shock absorber? A spring can absorb shock but, nobody's using them for that.

One important thing to note here before beginning is that charges from the power source never actually jump from plate to plate, it just makes voltages that move stuff around after reaching the first plate.

The potential drives a current to the top plate of C3. Now that there is a positive charge on the top of C3 that draws negative charge to the bottom plate of C3. Now that C3's bottom plate is negative, that means that the top of C1 has to be positive (the wire between in neutral, we have no reason to think otherwise) . Since the top of C1 is positive the bottom becomes negative. This does the same thing to C2, and now it is negative on the bottom with the same +Q that is on the top capacitor.

Since all of these capacitors are in series we can actually model them as a single capacitor with that same +Q on the top plate and -Q on the bottom plate that each of them has individually. Also, even though this is DC you can basically do the same thing with imaginary numbers and AC analysis

Q = V x C where Q is charge, C is capacitance. So,

(Q/Ctot) = (Q/C1) + (Q/C2) + (Q/C3)

Q's cancel. Therefore,

1/Ctot = (1/C1) + (1/C2) + (1/C3)

The key is to understand what happens with the actual charge carriers (electrons) in the circuit.

For starters, because of the battery, electrons flow counterclockwise through the top wire, into the battery, away from the top plate of c3.

This means there are less electrons at the top plate of c3.
As you know, electrons are attracted to areas of lower concentration.
So, electrons are attracted to the bottom plate of c3, but they can't pass through, and end up they collected on c3's bottom plate.
But those electrons came from the wire under c3, away from the top plate of c1.
So the process must repeat, and it does, through each capacitor, and ultimately pulling from the - terminal of the battery.
