>>11116000What I often find lacking in stories with Novikov-style time travel is plausible motives for characters doing what they must do (to make it consistent without parallel universes). Like in Yudkowsky's Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, Harry Potter's future self does this elaborate prank on his past self, and then he becomes the prankster himself, following the exact same plan precisely. I certainly wouldn't feel like slavishly repeating my future self's plan, just to test my autonomy and free will. Now somebody maybe might, so that kind of sequence of events could happen, but usually I'm left feeling a better job could be done of giving the characters plausible motives for acting the way they do. I do like this type of time travel more than anything with parallel universes though, it's much more mind-bending and more challenging to common sense notions of time, causality and free will.
