>>11117015Well magnesium helps with many other processes and cellular functions as well... but it essentially helps you have a healthy amount of melatonin naturally. As I said, melatonin is a hormone and supplementing hormones always carries risks like the potential to downregulate your natural production, especially if supplementation takes place instead of fixing a production related deficiency.
Melatonin is responsible for your sleep cycle, so unless you are alternating normal and 3rd shift jobs or globe trotting there shouldn't be that much disruption and irregularity in your circadian rhythm. It basically changes your blood pressure, temperature, and hormone and dopamine levels to prepare you for sleep.
Magnesium like I said will raise your melatonin to a good level. Thus, you get the natural benefits of melatonin and a corrected rhythm while also possibly correcting the cause of it being out-of-whack. Too much melatonin and too little magnesium can create difficulty sleeping ironically. Mag also binds to GABA receptors and makes you feel relaxed and thus able to fall asleep easier. Here I don't feel like typing any more.
https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/magnesium-and-sleepThis was just one of the first few google results but it is a very well documented and researched topic not something I'm pulling out of my ass. I'm also not saying melatonin is BAD, I mean I would suggest it before trying ambien or something, but most people I meet on melatonin use it basically like you would benadryl... to just induce a state of drowsiness and fall asleep easier (though the mechanism is obviously different).
