Why are teeth so poorly built and ridiculously fragile when they should be one of the most important body parts an animal has?

Because evolution happens to be a random process where different genes are created and altered by mutations and mixing two different genoms together. The creatures being born live or die depending on their inborn genetic capabilities. Teeth themselves aren't poorly built. In humans, they usually last for roughly 30 to 40 years which isn't bad. Humans however can't regrow teeth and most animals can't either. Missing teeth either did not infer with the ability of procreating or animals lost their teeth by the time where most of them already ceased procreating.

Streptococcus mutans & lactobacilli produce acid whenever they are fed, especially carbohydrates. If they are fed constantly (munching), acid is produced constaintly. If they are fed rarely (rigorous meal times), acid is produced more rarely. Besides, carbohydrate rich diet didnt exist except for the last 100 years.
