They would need more infrastructure to support the metabolism and big brain as well as arms if they want to be useful so they would not resemble the original exactly. Better to just modify humans into cat girls as the path of least resistance. Those theoretical scientists would be better of researching how to modify embryo genomes or creating widespread genetic change in living organisms, so gene insertion and genomics.
