So with cell and molecular biology technology becoming more cost effective and available to the common man how long before a well read individual could conceivably clone a recently extinct species in their basement?

I looked it up. You can just buy cell lines by specific organ and pathology online. It's like 300 bucks at the lowest and they come refrigerated. Nonprofits even get a discount.

Now what you could do in your basement is clone genes of one organism in another. For example you could make DMT producing yeast. Biochemically its straightforward and far more complicated drugs have been done this way.

Provided you have the DNA of the organism, implanting it into a zygote shouldn't be very difficult or expensive (under 10k USD for all equipment which you can reuse).

The bigger hurdle would be actually gestating the thing. Mammals are obviously extremely hard, as you need a womb, so you would need a mother.

Insects though? I don't know enough about their early development to say, but if you had a closely related species, then you could probably implant the DNA into the egg easily enough, but it's probably difficult to do it without damage?

If it's not possible today, then probably 10-20 years tops.
