I heard somewhere that Japan has relatively little in the way of metal deposits, is that true? If it is, what caused it, and what other resources are relatively scarce in Japan, and why?

I don't get it. How can any of the lands be relatively low in metal when each area has metal? Where do they even find metal too? Caves? Mountains? How do you tell ores apart? How do you tell rocks apart? Did Japan have miners too? Did everyone universally use a pickaxe for mining?

That resources aren't evenly distributed around the planet.
When the early earth was molten most of the iron and other denser elements settled to the core.
Most of the iron deposits in the crust is from the earth being hit by orbital debris as the solar system settled down.

This is what I've been told as well. The Japanese compensated for their low quality ores through folding, which strengthens the steel and reduces impurities. Modern laminated steels from Japan such as ZDP-189 and VG-10 are highly regarded in the cutlery industry. Many Japanese companies won't even sell bar stock to foreign buyers in order to protect industry secrets.

This is true for more than metallurgy. I was a post doc in Japan and saw equipment that was not for sale in the West, because those were part of what gave Japan an edge in thin film displays etc.
