This initiation usually takes the form of an allegory or a set of allegories which impart these mysteries to you as a child.
Then you will need to be exposed to some hidden or secretive knowledge down the line, after your character has developed in such a way as to appreciate it within the context of the mysteries. The seed of suspicion, about the nature of reality being different than what you have been told, begins to sprout and take form, rising from suspicion into obsession.
By nurturing that metaphorical plant, it grows eventually to bear metaphorical fruit.
At this point you are "mad" and if you have the means to perform the experiments you are no longer a philosopher but have become a scientist. That means is the main obstacle.
