it definitely was a total white dude thing for a long time that defended itself from objections by real scientists by sheer force of will as well as the fact that they were much more understandable to the humanities department people who were high-up in the academic structure too
what this led to was a very scientifically weak sector of social sciences being ensconced in the academic framework, treated as a science, when all real scientists hated them and only humanities liked them, but a few smart white dudes held it up for a few years.
then they retired or died. so in many departments around the US, prominent high-level positions opened up in social science, and the people responsible for the positions' existence were humanities people like english professors and art history professors. they decided as best they could on who should fill these positions. and naturally it turned out to be a bunch of psychologists and philosophers who happened to have political opinions that aligned with the humanities department professors in charge of them. but they got to call themselves scientists.
actually several universities got rid of their sociology departments around the time this went on because it was obviously stupid. but the stupidity survived in some schools
