Work is a $transfer$ of energy to/from a body via a force acting through a displacement. A body can contain energy, but cannot contain work, since work is a transfer of energy. Likewise, rigorously speaking, heat is also a transfer of energy, so a body cannot contain heat despite being capable of heating or being heated. In common parlance thermal energy is often called heat, hence the confusion.
