I've been doing a lot of thinking on the potential rise of hair in what would be the first mammal like synapsids. Your thoughts anons?

Bump. Paleontology does not get enough love on this board.

Therapsids, and specifically Cynodonts, are the synapsids we associate most closely with mammals, and the oldest originate from around 260mya. Evidence of whiskers, and thereby hair, exists in the form of pits in their snouts.

Oh yes I totally agree! What I find interesting is that these basal cynodonts and anything before them don't really show signs of these whisker pits but the more avdanced non mammalian ones that do show there were ligament attatchments to give support. I made a hypothesis the other night on whiskerless therocephalians using their nerve input built snouts to prod around in the dirt and feel the vibrations of small burrowing prey. Basically Echidna bears.

Based and mamillarypilled. Not a paleontologist. It is my opinion that hair arose from scutes, which are found in most of the extant tetrapod clades (armadillo, bird leg, turtle shell, gator skin). Hair and scutes are both keratinous and are extruded from the dermis. Notably, though, "hair" is composed of glandular, nervous, circulatory and its own excretion tissue. It's like a mini organ. Probably developed from a mass extinction event and punctuated equilibrium.

Interesting take. I do know that once we get around dimetrodon we notice smooth scaleless skin for the most part on the body (excluding the belly) and up towards Thercephalians like Estemmenosuchus it's essentially completely scaleless with osteoderms underneath smooth skin. Here's something of interest, typical hairs have nerve inputs on them. A bit out there but perhaps hair could've started from an animal that was sensing vibrations through its feet (Similar to some birds) while developing protuberences (Superficially scale like buds? Perhaps vestige scales that were on the lower half of the body similar to dimetrodon but repurposed?) to sense vibrations in tunnel walls which eventually bacame a bit more widespread on the body. Once these forms traded off these crude feelers for sight they also doubled as insulation. Perhaps by coming out of the tunnels and well sensing every little detail around you can be dissorienting so the ones with the weaker sensory survived, or they just got out before they can develop into true "whiskers". This is where the electrosensory therapsid idea plays into whiskers, since the body wide filaments weren't of much use they made do with their sensitive snouts to house vibrissae. Though asof now this is a crude draft idea that will be fleshed out and become more well structured in the future.
