How many of you actually self taught yourself something to competence? Did you ever make anything out of it? How do you avoid teaching yourself “wrong”?

Chemistry. Something I taught myself in my spare time starting 8th grade. I got high A's in my chem classes and must have studied a grand total of 4 hours throughout my academic career for it. I'm a chem undergrad now, looking at getting a career in the field. I didn't learn it wrong because I experimented. Though it really defeats the point of me replying, school also really helped refine my skills.

Sure: assembly programming on embedded platforms.
Did you ever make anything out of it?
Yes, I had a well paid job by proving I could do a far better job of programming than compilers could.

I think the main risk in self-teaching is not that you will teach yourself wrong, but that you will not be able to differentiate very well between what is relevant and not relevant, and then it although it will take you 100 times longer to self-teach than to be taught by an expert, you can can get bogged down in the irrelevant stuff and have it 10,000 times longer than it would have. IMO, there is no learning so good as what you can do with lectures from experts who will answer your questions as they arise.

Math. I started 6th grade as a completely mathematically-incompetent englishtard. 99th+ percentile reading scores, ~73rd math. I decided to teach myself algebra and trig to improve in that area, which eventually led to self-studying calculus as a 7th grader. I kept working at it, and managed to test out of quite a few things. I 4.0'd graduate PDEs at 16, which amongst other things provided external validation of competence.

I have tried to learn guitar since 2006, at most I had 5 classes with a teacher. I'm not a virtuosso but I can play very cool stuff

This question is like a beautiful paradox dude. I am pretty sure that if you wanna learn something you are going to do a lot of things wrong, even with a teacher. So if you wanna learn how to learn things by yourself, then you gonna do it wrong many times, until you do it right, there is no scape.

Making mistakes and being wrong is an indispensable part of learning
Classroom learning is highly effective precisely because students engage in the process of making errors and then having them corrected, but there's no reason you can't do that all by yourself
