You see, we had diplomas in the past where you had a shitload of time to write stuff and got double the credits for it.
Since 2009 or so we have the bachelor master system. The difficulty and exam structure of the diploma stayed the same, but in much shorter time. The first 2 semester are the hardest and in a lot of unis you need to write them in the first 5 semester at least once or you get second and third tries.
Especially in stem there are almost no old exams and it's questionable if the professor doesn't throw something completely abstract and absurd out of his ass in the exam.
The so called Universities of Applied Sciences are a bit better, but even there we have sometimes can have brutal ones (the UOAS in Karlsruhe and Kaiserslautern are partly as hard as the actual universities, Electrical Engineering and Physics have a failing and drop out rate of 80+%).
But it is true that they are mostly easier than actual unis, I would say most of them are on part with your average US college.
