Any math or CS postdocs here? Need your advice.

I was suggested an assistant prof. position in AI standardization. Do anyone here have any experience with standardization? Been google scholaring the topics and haven't found anything even remotely "mathematical". The perspective of ending this god damn PD fuckery is attractive as hell though.

I went from post doc positions to industry. Yes, it is still a lot of work but at least you get well paid for the job.

You are partly right, but just partly. I have a good background in ML, but NOT standardization. It turned out kinda suddenly, but that's a different story. Currently, I am to do the choice

You probably should have focused more on mathematical analysis / ML theory if you wanted more mathematics in your work? There are plenty of research areas / prof positions for mathematical CS research - aka anything not in systems or (most of) ML

I did focus on it, but this specific position changed orientation a bit during the process.
Besides, there may be a plenty of positions, but it's virtually impossible to land one if you're not a superstar with h-index >20

True

Nor did I, back in the day. I just realised I had to pay down student loans.
Still, having an escape hatch means your university cannot blackmail you the way some do when they realise their staff and post docs are captive with no hope of an industry job. I see that a lot here where academic inbreeding is way out of control.

Anyone in comp sci / information systems / AI ddepartments can't really be blackmailed like that. It's because Google Facebook Amazon banks other tech companies etc easily pay them 3-5x more. It's a challenge for institutions to keep qualified people and I say it also reflects on the fields (most groundbreaking research / applications in cs ai come from companies)
