There's too much to know everything. I'm a software engineer, and difficult to be good at everything within software engineering itself. You can be up to date with concurrent and distributed systems research, but that won't leave any time to be an expert on computational statistics. I read philosophy on my spare time, but I am a complete amateur. Its not a matter of discipline, it's a matter of limited hours in a day. Not to mention your intelligence deteriorates with time.
It is possible to study all day though. That's just discipline.
