On the other hand, hep-th is a fucking trap for gifted students because, sure you can come up with insanely complicated theories and have elegant mathematical solutions, but no one in physics really cares about your theoretical results unless they either:
1) have direct implications for what one can test in experiment, or
2) are derived from fundamental, well-established physics (e.g. Bell inequalities, pretty much anything in quantum info really).
Too much that the hep-th community is just shitting out wild theories that no one has any capability to test, and it really is a dead end for early career theorists IMO. Look at Preskill and Wilczek and what they used to work on vs. their interests now.
