I find numbers so mysterious. Did we invent or discover them? Like, they are so self-referential and stuff. A whole is two halves and two is two wholes. Two is 4 half ones. 2 over 4 is half and 4 over 2 is 2. What the fuck is even going on?

Consider an alien species with the same level of advancement of us. The symbols would be different, but the meaning (1+1=2) will still be there. This is what makes me believe that math is a discovery, not an invention

Surely an intelligent technological species would understand that there are discrete things, pluralities of those things, and counts of those pluralities.
Regardless if you have a three dozen gross or A plork of zork borks you'd need some method of counting and grouping, which seems like the ground floor of math as a field.

Even if everything is continuous, for macroscopic non-relativistic organisms like us it would be very plausible for brains to process things discretely. That's how physics appears to us anyways at these energy scales. The discretization is like an emergent property. Therefore the structures of math and logic appear to be fundamental in nature and not merely inventions or byproducts of our brain's processing.
