When these were being marketed fuel prices were extremely low, and they were too loud for nose restrictions and cabin volume. The cost of continued R&D and FAA approval combined with minimal cost savings meant the market wasn't there because the return wasn't there.

It wasn't a bad idea, but modern jet engines have since surpassed the fuel savings

That's realistically a problem for any aircraft fan, and is solved by physically making the aircraft slower, which is the future anyway
