Surface Bro 5 pen settings and bluetooth don't work if you install ubuntu. I'm not sure about other distros specifically but I believe ubuntu was most up to date. There's some minor differences in processing architecture if you care deeply about its cooling and sleep cycles. I don't know what you need to run your software but I hope it's compatible with windows.
Why not just install a dual-boot? Well, cortana's a loose slut, the native Hotspot Shield or whatever is a data vendor thanks to RePaiblicans, a billion things start on boot you have to be a professional fucking mario speedrunner to disable, and despite having the Pro access or whatever -- highest authority money can buy -- I still have settings "managed by my organization". I feel like a girl alone at a shady party every time I boot up, getting sleased on, upskirt shots of my activities, getting told "no" when they're getting their slimy mitts all over my shit. I got it for $400 at a pawn shop and discovered the camera was damaged, I still slap a sticker on that creep.
It's got an SSD right out the box, lightweight, fits in my bag nicely, detachable and durable keyboard with good travel, nice cable, modern processor with a good variety of choices depending on your budget and use case with incredible value for whatever you choose, especially next to comparable machines who are either marked up or are an 8lb thinkpad. It's an all-around fantastic machine, that only runs the commercial version of an ad-infested streaming site.
