When you sleep your brain is essentially still working on the problem and learning. They've done studies on rats where they sent them through mazes and when they went to sleep, the exact same neurons were firing in the same sequence as the ones that ran the maze, but way, way faster.

I don't even know if sleep is really what did it, a lot of times when I just put something down and come back to it I'll have a better understanding, this seems to also work for art and playing the piano, usually when I take a break I come back better.
