if you don't do shit with your hands, and you sit there searching stackexchange for Mathematica tips all day to solve some equations, you need to meet a higher standard to be considered a "scientist". at least condensed matter guys think about the real world, so they pass. but if you work on N=4 Super Yang-Mills or AdS5 space or 2D Jackiw-Titelboim gravity or 6D(2,0) superconformal field theory, then you just need to admit to yourself that it is pure math that is fundamentally inconsistent with the universe. you are not a scientist. just call yourself a mathematician so that people will actually understand what you're really about, dweebs
