Someone suggested "why is the sky blue?" and I think that might be simple enough for a 12 year old audience. It also needs to be a few minutes long but the key is on how I capture their interest.

Any suggestions on how to make the science principles simple and interesting for the audience though?

Magnets and how a lot of "nonmagnetic" things can be magnetic, for example you can repel fruits. I guess you can start out with a regular magnet and then demonstrate with a rare earth magnet.
