Is there any legit info about what it is used for and what are the peak moments of production of DMT and MAOIs besides those thin hypotheses about dreams and dying?

A dying organism goes through stress --> a nice DMT screensaver about being in its own species' heaven calms it down.

- Occam's razor: Vestigial byproduct. It just happened.
- Hypothesis (creative): Possibly a virus or protozoa-infected (look up apicomplexa) cell that produced a tryptamine neurotransmitter variation in a bottleneck event animal. It is known that when animal is dying and is under stress, "toxic" byproducts linked with inflammatory processes are released are which is bad news to whatever predator that eats it. With that in mind it could have a means to an end to maintain equilibrium in the animal kingdom.

I am going with "it just happened."

Natural DMT levels are not psychoactive.
Most drugs work by mimicking neurochemicals. The catch is, many neurochemicals are either not bioavailable (see: dopamine vs. L-dopa) or cause nasty side effects at narcotic doses (tripping is technically a non-lethal overdose)
DMT just happens, by chance, to have high bioavailability and few negative side effects.
