will ornithopters become a more successful technology? i could understand in the past that dealing with the varying aerodynamics was too hard for control systems, so simple fixed wing aircraft were easier to design and control, but maybe that can be overcome in ornithopters with more advanced control computers and machine learning based control software. is that plausible? seems like they could be quite efficient

My intuition says they would be less efficient, as the wing fights air resistance on the way up and lift and air resis. on the way down. Do you have any argument as to why they would be more efficient?

well, for example it gives a certain amount of "thrust vectoring" as opposed to e.g. an airplane using a control surface for turns. like for example on a standard airplane, the rudder is what turns the airplane, but the rudder takes some power to turn (quite a bit of force actually, because of wind resistance). whereas if the standard airplane could thrust-vector like e.g. on an F22 or something, it could turn the plane simply by aiming the engines a little to the side. so you save the energy of turning the rudder. for an ornithopter with bird-like wings, you could imagine the same sort of thing -- the force could be directed by specific wing flaps

actually flagella are very much a rotor. but i know what you mean. anyhow legs are better at bumpy surfaces and jumps.

i think ornithopters could legit be more efficient, especially if we want battery powered aircraft

why not just compare energy required to maintain a given altitude at speed x of the most inefficient jet-powered aircraft vs the most efficient ornithopter imaginable, the higher x gets, the bigger the win will be for modern technology

the idea is cool in the sense that it's cool to own a wooden ferrari, but not very efficient

fast flight isn't what i'm necessarily thinking of. i mean helicopters are viable economically even though they suck at high x. and an ornithopter might be more practical for short-runway takeoffs. heck, some birds can friggin hover (take hummingbirds) -- i doubt a stupid turbofan like the F-35 hovering is more efficient than a good hummingbird or bumblebee hover
