What were the main advantages of a space shuttle over a traditional rocket, or even a Falcon Heavy.
Are there any reasons NASA should left one shuttle in hangar for a special event/mission?

You can pick up stuff from up there (such as a spy satellite) and take it down in one piece and haul things around orbit
Reliability and maintenence issues prevented it from being cheap rocket replacement, which wasn't all that unsound in concept - you have single use solid boosters (cheap and reusable) and fuel tank (also cheap) and the expensive part is reusable many times.
But NASA being NASA managed to make that into absolute money sinkhole.

it was a flying reusable workstation
none spacecraft can do this (maybe ISS, but its not designed for flying distances)
it had a big ass trunk, canadarm, 7 people on board, and could fit an entire spacelab inside

The premise of the space shuttle is that it would be an orbital taxi which would bring a whole lot of flexibility to space flight.
Its initial goal was to simplify the building of an orbital station during the Cold War.

Then the maintenance happened to be extremely complex and a money sink compared to just shoot cheap tubes of fuel in space.

They are still the future because we won't be able to just dump trash in orbit forever but we will need many progresses in terms of propulsion and materials to beat rockets.
