To give an anecdotal example; I find that with generally anything I learn in class, I can retain 90% of what I learn right off the bat unless I was literally sleeping, and since most classes in anything have homework/return to previous topics later down the line, in recalling what I know, and getting flustered for not remembering the 10% I forgot, I consolidate that stuff, and have never had to study seriously for things I've been shown, even at university level.
Contrast that to some idiots I know who fill entire libraries with mindmaps, bullet points, and just general notes written multiple times over, and still barely scrape by on their tests
It's all about being able to integrate things into your mind quickly, rather than repeating a set phrase/copy a diagram. Most non-saharan IQ humans can match even a master memoriser with practice, but being able to do so in a reasonable period of time is what separates them from the master
