-Trucks do most of the damage to modern roads. Trucks pulling potentially tons of building materials, food, fuel, etc.. And lots of them. CONSTANTLY. I think the heaviest thing a cobblestone road would have ever had to historically deal with was the distributed mass of armies, horses, and carts filled with not quite a ton of goods..... And if you're a fantasy kind of guy: Dragons and Dinosaurs, but even then as a 'creature' their weight is organic and better distributed than a vehicle.
-Asphalt roads are easy to make, inexpensive to maintain, and generally require less labor and resource than other kinds of roads. Did you know Asphalt is made out of 'Crude Bitumen'? It's a kind of semi-solid, syrupy, form of petroleum. Some people don't know this.
-Cobblestone roads are a fucking bitch to drive on at speeds greater than, like, 30km an hour because of how uneven and bumpy the surface is. They're perfect for horses, carriages, and people, but they're awful for cars... And maybe sleds?
