>>11077340No, people always complain about engineers, but by in large, people do not protest its relevance as a math and science topic. TCS is straight math and gets little love here, and what little discussion derails into “my major is better than yours.”
>>11077288Based schizo. I agree that introductory TCS tends not to use the most “wow” toolkit out there, but the reason why it’s a huge math field is that even something as rudimentary as the nondeterministic time hierarchy theorem takes creativity to produce. Early TCS was about being clever about simple mathematical structures, but TCS has long since been about being clever with much more complicated mathematics. Hell, alg geo is like the biggest lead we have in P vs NP. That result isn’t as important as the techniques and understand it’ll give us for separating lower bounds for other classes. Most people agree P NP, but the actual proof will illuminate how to separate other classes even though it will likely be nonconstructive and very tricky.
tl;dr TCS isn’t easy at all, get a grip. It also has way more to do than just pure complexity. Comp top is like a best hits collection of alg top, graph theory, analysis, and geometry
