Nasa isn't just for science. They are basically our greatest set of achievements as a species. Nasa is essentially a role model. Now, they probably secretly know that, and act according to it. But from the government's perspective, they just want nasa to not be a black eye for them. So silly little things like this are done.

Earth day is pretty silly too. We should probably give a shit about our planet every day. And surprise surprise, we do(the people do, the politicians, not so much). And same thing with this. We acknowledge both sexes contributions, and it's common knowledge how many of our greatest hits were made by men, like, do you think at some point we're gonna ferget about it? No. Nobody is ever confused when they do these simple gay(happy, cheerful) little things to make us feel good inside for a minute.
