It's not the conventional way this problem is solved in intro physics, but that's a good thing. It is important to understand the idea that total mechanical energy is conserved, and you actually do not need to separate it into x and y components. It's also important to realize that the velocity at the apex of the ball's trajectory, and thus its kinetic energy, is nonzero, and that the derivative of this parabola, dy/dx, is not the same as dv/dt. Etc. etc. The very fact that you're asking if it's correct is an indication this is a good way to teach you.
