"Grounding" only works because of the size of the Earth and thus the ability to absorb any excess chargethats not true. grounding is a system to prevent humans from being electrocuted only. its purpose is to have a sensor that senses current though the ground. the current is assumed to be from a human touching a hot wire, since the hot and neutral should be isolated from ground. ground in most cases would never include the actual ground, but something like a metal workbench.
in the case in the photo, they could have just left the ground disconnected with the same effect.
