When one of the world's leading electrochemists thought he had done it, and published a paper in it, the media came after him hard for some reason, now you can't talk about it. Cold fusion is taboo for some reason. So no grants or funding and you are putting your career on the line.
Might be a conspiracy, might not.
Either way if it's real it's going to take much longer than it should to find because of politics.

And contrary to popular belief it doesn't yield tons of energy compared to the average amount of heat input needed to accomplish this. It's not very feasible that chemical interactions could get over such a large amount of potential to initiate the reaction. And cold fusions main mechanical explanations rely on forming what I can only describe as tiny scuba tanks inside the pores of an electrode and pressurizing them using electricity. This isn't impossible, but it's not super feasible either.

My late mentor was a major cold fusion nut (I don't mean that as an insult, his passion was amazing, damn we miss him) and I'm a chemist. I'll try to make another post in here with some variations on how it would be thought to work and then explain the challenges of why they don't quite work. I think it's stupid it's taboo since it's such cheap research and even if it's lottery ticket odds it's worth the pay out. And we will likely get some excellent side data from understanding the chemistry. I don't believe it works, but I don't believe it's that far fetched either.

Because the only two ways we know how to fuse shit is through extreme heat or extreme gravity. We can't make extreme gravity on earth because we want to live, and making the heat high enough to start fusion in these low gravity environments requires so much fucking energy that it's questionable whether it is possible at all to net a return on the investment.
