yeah but it'll be less important than sustaining the earth and it'll take a backseat to that. he might get a trip to mars in and a mars walk but by the time that happens climate change will take more of a forefront due to the dire need for immediate action.

Depends on how things go with schedule/plans. No plan survives contact with reality. That's because no one is omnipotent/omniscient. Thus every plan is by nature, subject to failures/delays/etc.

Much more likely. The only key tech he needs is refueling in orbit, bit of money and landing.

The problem with sending people is it requires NASA's experience. Which NASA might or might not give depending on the politics of SLS.

I think SpaceX stands a good chance in doing so. They have the cheap access to space required to start work on sending people to Mars. Worst case scenario (that doesn't involve the company somehow dissolving) SpaceX would just team up with another company/organization that has some capability SpaceX is lacking.

His plan constantly changes. Now he says they will send 3 cargo rockets, then maybe a few more before they send colonists.

Now keep in mind if everything goes right and on schedule the rockets will be developed and able to land on mars. But there is no equipment to fill those rockets. No hab is designed, no power storage system, no propellant plant, no long term atmospherics, and certainly no water pump and tower system. Hell they don't even have a location for where to go to dig for the water.

literally does not matter if we die before getting to that point on the habitable planet that we've evolved to live on because we fucked it up so bad. climate change is already here. versus the possibility of walking on the surface of mars.

We're at 0.8C warming right now. At 4C warming we will enter a positive feedback loop where the ocean's methane clathrates will release into the atmosphere and guarantee a downward spiral into a Venus-like planet.

We will reach 1C warming in 2025 at current pacing. 1.5C in 2050 and 2C in 2110.

4C will be reached in ~2450 following our current trajectory.

The Paris Climate Accord is trying to limit global warming to 1.5C with an absolute limit at 2C as a worst case scenario.

SpaceX will most likely go to mars before 2050 and therefor the Earth will not even be at 1.5C let alone the 4C necessary for global warming to be a serious problem.
