why the fuck does he want to throw so much resources into colonizing mars when it's a barren fat bitch of a gravity well? It would make way more sense to invest in earth servicing infrastructure such as starlink and mineral exploration missions in near earth space and to the lower ?v areas of the astroid belt. If starlink ends up minting money like musk needs for his mars colonization this money would be much better spent investing in setting up an infrastructure for cost effective mining of astroids and development of the needed technologies such as nuclear thermal propulsion.

And if musk really does want to preserve mankind if the earth gets taken out I really dont see how an inhospitable gravity well where resource extraction is hard would preserve civilization better than a space infrastructure already suited for easy access to resources.
