Realistically though, I believe in pivot irrigation the land is much less valuable than the water/fertilizer. You can see in your picture, the surrounding land is not used for anything. So there's not as much advantage to maximizing density as would be typical. I imagine the grid design also makes things like water distribution and reclamation channels, and transportation easier to design
