Yeah this is why its stupid.

The variable descriptions literally just describe an average. The idea that the exponent can be defined as a ‘learning rate’ is stupid because the only value it could ever take is -1.

The whole ‘learning curve’ concept isn’t empirical, so the idea of it works, but the lecturer trying to describe it with an equation that doesn’t even work, when it isn’t needed, just bugs me

The more I look at it the angrier I get. I look at ridiculous, empirically derived graphs with weird variables all day long, and not once have I been completely stumped. SOMEBODY must have drawn this monstrosity. What I would give to watch the lecturer stumble over their words if I were to ask them what the shaded area above the curved means, or what the primes are, or what the fuck "moving down the curve" means.

The Y-axis is the time you take to do something. The X-axis is the knowledge you have on the subject. The more knowledge you have, the quicker said thing can be done. It also proposes the exponential behavior, which means that the first few steps tend to matter more overall than the really advanced stuff.
I mean, it makes sense, it just doesn't have any proofs of the behavior being like this.

They don't solely use this model, they also use Crawford's incremental unit time model. Do you know why? Because they happen to be useful when determine how long a project will take, how wages should increase with experience, how they can expect productivity to grow with time, when they should inspect labor performance on the floor, etc etc. Did you even read the article I linked?

a= Unit
X = quantity

Y=a/x

So to throw in b as an exponent and say “this is the learning curve, expressed as a percentage!” Doesn’t really work, because it could only ever take a value of -1.

You shouldn’t make up an equation and fill it with made up variables to be able to expain a simple relationship. It is, as i said in the OP, pseudo-mathematical
